Morning Fog...



Usually, on mornings like this the fog is confined to the wetlands. Not this morning. As the sky lightened you could see that the fog was hanging at about 30 ft off the ground in wispy strands, right above the level of the street lights. It was almost as if the lights were holding it up, keeping the roads clear for drivers. In other places the fog reached the ground. The wetlands at SPC, the cemeteries, ball fields, anywhere there weren't any streetlights to hold it up...

Eyes in the office....

Having two gray cats can be a challenge on dark, gray mornings, when sunrise is more then an hour away. This morning, as I was getting ready to leave, I wanted to make sure Mara wasn't in the closet. I was pretty sure, since I'd heard her jump down from the dresser and I'd just seen Nyala in the kitchen. I turned on the laundry room light and looked through the dark house toward the front room. There among the glow of the modem lights were two yellow, disembodied eyes, that moved and blinked, then bobbed as Nyala joined her. Mara found. And as I was closing the pocket door, a second pair of eyes joined the first, hovering by the window.... watching me leave for work...

A Wet Night at Raymond James....

In March 2007, the US Men's National Soccer Team (USMNT) came to Raymond James Stadium to play Ecuador. I really wanted to go to that game, but being in the middle of chemo, it didn't seem like a good idea to buy tickets early and hope I was feeling well enough to go. We decided to take our chances and try to get tickets at the game provided I was feeling up to it. The day arrived, bright and sunny and our coach brought the A-team. Donavan, Beasley, Howard and others. There was only one problem. The organizers grossly misjudged the interest in the game and didn't call enough stadium personnel to work that day. The result was not enough ticket takers, or sellers for the crowd that arrived. Traffic was snarled and getting in was a nightmare. The north gate wasn't opened and anyone who tried to pick their tickets up at Will-Call was lucky to get through the gate before more then first quarter of the game was over. Ten minutes into the game and no closer to the ticket window we turned back and headed home. One goal had already been scored. Edward had the forethought to set up to tape the game "just in case" we didn't get in. We went home, started the game and watch from the comfort of the living room, disappointed to not be there in person.

Fast forward 3 years...

With the World Cup only four months away, and the USMNT already qualified to go to Johannesburg, South Africa, they once again came to Tampa to play in Raymond James, this time on a Wednesday night, this time against El Salvador. This time we weren't taking any chances. We bought tickets on line and printed them out our selves. We weren't going to chance missing the game because of a fiasco like three years ago.

As game day approached we realized there might be a small problem. Rain. The weather for the day of the game was predicted to be cold and wet. There was a 50% chance of rain, with the highest chance centered on kickoff time. The temperature was supposed to be 52F falling to 48F by the end of the game. Now what? Oh, and the coach was planning on bringing the B-Team, the guys he was looking at to fill out the bench during the World Cup. We wondered what kind of game we were in for, but the tickets were bought, there was no refund. We were going to the game, rain or no.

Checking the radar through the morning, we watched the rain approach. Most of it was going north, but it soon became apparent it was not going to miss us. We got out our long underwear, heavy sweaters and wool socks. We took gloves, hats and heavy boots, too. We stopped at Walgreens and picked up rain ponchos. We were about as ready as can be. And as we left the house, the rain arrived. It had the potential to be a very cold night.

Since game time was 7:00 pm, we decided to head over early, get some dinner near the stadium and hang out until it was time to go the final mile. As we headed for the stadium it started raining even harder. Traffic was the typical snarled mess, with people cutting the line, cops redirecting the cheaters and everyone jockeying for position. After about 15 minutes we were in the parking lot and headed for the gate. So far so good. The rain even lightened up for the walk from the car. We got to our seats 10 minutes before the start of the game. We found our places easily and settled in, drying the seats with towel we'd brought just for that purpose. Then it started to rain harder again. It was time to deploy the ponchos.

About half the crowd had come prepared. Another quarter bought ponchos on site, thin plastic rain covers that had a hood and came down to about your waist. The rest of the folks got wet. Our ponchos worked really well, forming a little tent over our shoulders and lap. When you tucked in your feet you were completely covered. They worked great, even though we both noticed that there was condensation on the inside. It was nothing compared to the outside, which dripped with rain.

The USMNT played well enough. They gave away a horrible goal in the 60th minute when the defense broke down and one of our players gave the ball away to an El Salvadorian six feet from the goal. There was nothing our goalie could do. It was looking grim for our boys. Then in the 75th minute, we scored on a header from Brian Ching. The game was even and things were looking brighter. In fact the rain had stopped to, letting us all come out from under our hoods in the 60th minute. As the clock ticked down it looked like the game might end in a tie. The referee added four minutes of extra time to the game and both sides scrambled to get that one last goal. Then it happened, two minutes into stoppage time Sacha Kljestan took a pass from Brain Ching and slotted it home for the game winner. The final 2-1, USA.

It was neat to be at the game. It was neat to be in Raymond James Stadium. We've still never been there for a Bucs game. And most of all, it was great to walk out of the game warm and dry on a raw winter night in Florida. I only wished the stars of our squad had been there. 21,737 braved the wet weather to support the team. The whole game, Sam's Army cheered, drummed, trumpeted, and sang horribly off key in the south end of the stadium. They show up to every game, and every game they go home hoarse and happy, win or lose. It's what they do. No doubt there will be a small contingent of Sam's Army in South Africa.

Come back to Raymond James, fellas. We like you in Tampa. We had 34,000+ for the game against Ecuador in 2007. That game you brought the A-team. That game was on a Saturday and it was sunny. Pick another Saturday for the game. And if you do come back, we promise we'll try to set another record for game attendance.

It often devolves into a wrestling match, if Mara doesn't get up and leave...


But often times, when we've gone out for something, we come home to find them together in a chair. I think Nyala suffers from a little separation anxiety. So she seeks Mara out when we're not here...

The problem with underground cables...


Seems like a good idea... at least in parts of Florida. Bury the cables. Then if we get a hurricane, they won't be knocked down. The cables will all be nice and snug in there little holes patiently waiting for their powers supplies to be repaired or reconnected. Neighborhoods are prettier, too. No unsightly overhead lines... and believe me, they get pretty unsightly down here.

That is... until you think about the 30-odd inches of rain we get every year in this state. And let's not forget about the tree roots and other things that could break a cable.

At work, our gate system for the parking lot is not working. Water has saturated the cables and shorted-out the wires. None of the remote access boxes work anymore. In fact the sensors have been removed to keep them from walking away. (We're not located in the best of neighborhoods.) Estimates for repair or replacement are in the $10,000.00 range. It's been broken for about 8 months.

At home, it is a slightly more interesting problem.

For some time, our cable TV picture has been less the stellar... especially during football games. More so during popular football games, like the BCS Championship. The picture is broken up by tiling and marco-blocking. Think of the old NHL experiment with putting a "comet tail" on the hockey puck, so the uninitiated could follow the game. Our problem is that football players leave little trails of pixels behind them and the grass morphs into blocks of differentiating green colors... all of which would snap back into clarity a few seconds later. This would happen about every 10-15 seconds. Sometimes faster. It was so bad one day we ended up turning off a Bucs game because it was unwatchable. Every time we called DimShack (the names have been changed to protect the guilty), we would get excuses from its your TV/dIgital cable box/cable line to its the network to "gee, I don't know". We've had DimShack increase the signal power to the repeater, decrease the signal power coming into the house, replace the box, the line, and the modem and some combination of the above at the same time. Nothing worked until finally, the right engineer with the right equipment came out and checked the electromagnetic fields around the buried cables. "There's your problem, the cable is "leaking" into the ground. They'll need to replace the whole thing." In other words, a tree, some water or a mole, for all I know, cracked the cables protective casing and corroded the wires. We're at the beginning of the line for that cable. Theory has it, we should have enough signal not to notice the problem, but folks down the line would be getting crap. Maybe that's why we're seen a lot of Horizon and Hollogy trucks at our neighbors. Our neighbors have just given up on DimShack for cable service, rather then fight the system.

They scheduled to replace the cable within a a few days of diagnosing the problem. They started work yesterday around 2:00 pm. When I got home yesterday they were still diligently working on relaying the cable. They bore under the surface, bypassing sidewalks, streets and sprinkler systems. A hose with what looks like a torpedo at the head is inserted into a starting hole. The torpedo contains a pneumatic drill that thumps its way underground toward a hole they've dug at the other end of their path. It sounds like what I imagine the Thumpers would have sounded like on Dune when they were calling the worms. They're loud. The cats don't like them. I know. Back in Dec, we were woken up by Florida Flash and Flicker as they dug holes in the side yard to replace their power cable, which runs from the telephone pole in the back yard to the distribution box next to the driveway. They used a borer to lay their cable. But that's another story.

I walked out to the guys working beside the cable box when I got home yesterday. "How's it going?" I asked. There were 5 of them out there. One working and the other 4 watching. The fellow in the hole, whom I assumed was the foreman looked up. "The borer is stuck. It's about in the middle of the driveway." That's about 15 feet from the hole. And it's not just not going forward, it's not backing out either. They worked on it for about another 45 minutes last night before giving up, and stringing a temporary line, which they duct taped across the driveway. This morning, they arrived at about 8:00 am. At 1:00, Edward reported they had it out... finally. No, wait, that's a new one. They brought in a second borer. The first one is still under the driveway. They've dug more holes in the front yard then a gopher on a golf course.

They are running the cable in two directions. First, along the the front yard, beside the sidewalk. This cable will run from the junction box at the end of our driveway to the next junction box up the road. Second, they are running a new cable back to the telephone pole in the back yard. Along the same route the power company dug in their cable three weeks ago. They haven't started the second run yet. They're still trying to figure out how to free the first borer. Our side yard continues to look like a grassy version of Swiss cheese, with red stripes where the various utilities have marked where their cables lie.

The job has no doubt taken longer then expected. They've had to call in other help. The first crew called out a supervisor/trouble shooter. Next there was a Hollogy truck. They were trying to help. Turns out the Hollogy cable was out of place and the Dimshack borer took it out. It was their cable that is strung across the driveway and held down with duct tape. Bringing in the second borer means they'll start making progress on the cable replacement again. But they still have the problem of the stuck borer. They've been taking axes to our tree's roots. I'm hoping we don't get any big storms this year. There are four big oak trees out there now. No doubt they had something to do with this. But cutting tree roots is uncool when it comes to standing up in a hurricane. Or it could be the pine trees that were there when we moved in. It's hard to say.

I don't know how long they will work on freeing the borer. Or how many crew it will take to get it free. How many tree roots they will chop up, or if they will crack our sprinkler pipes in the process. I do know that in the end it will likely come down to one question if they can't get it free. Will it cost more to replace the borer, or repair the driveway...?

Christmas Tree: Deconstructed.


I took down the Christmas tree today, a few days early. However, it wasn't so much a "took down" the tree this year as a "took apart".

About 5 years ago, we invested in an artificial tree. Never thought I'd want an artificial tree, but changes in circumstances and philosophies convinced me it was the right thing to do. I couldn't justify cutting down a living tree any more. Mind you, I love the smell of a fresh cut pine tree. I always will. But I just couldn't support it any more, cutting down a living thing to put in me living room for 2 weeks. Next came potted trees. I would find either a Leland Cyprus, or a Red Cedar, potted and really live, which we would donate to the park behind the house each year. We know where several of our former Christmas trees are planted and visit them regularly. Allergies put an end to that practice.

In 2004, we bought an artificial tree. We'd waited until the week before Christmas. I really wanted a tree and that was the only option. After visiting several stores I settled on one at Lowes. As luck would have it, Lowes had already posted their clearance discounts. Everything was 75% off. I walked out of the store with a 6.5 foot pre-lit tree and a nice tree skirt for $35.00. We've used them ever since.

This year when we set it up, the top string of lights were not working. That's the disadvantage to a pre-lit tree. You can't take the lights off, spread the string out on the floor and figure out what's wrong. We worked on the string for about 90 minutes, poking through the branches, re-seating all the bulbs, and looking for bad wires and fuses. Nothing, everything looked OK. We couldn't find the problem. Finally we gave up and got out the old string of lights from the days of the potted trees. I plugged in the old string, stood up to start putting them on the tree, and (go figure) the pre-lit lights were on. ??? I still don't know why they were out. Fine. Be that way. We put the old string back in it's box and finished the rest of the decorating.

The string at the top of the tree didn't give us any more trouble, but other strings did. A few days after the tree was up we noticed that the bottom looked a little dark. There was a string out on the bottom of the tree. This had happened a few years ago when Mara had chewed a bulb out of it's socket. Replacing that bulb brought the lights back on. This year, it wasn't a missing bulb. Then a few nights later, Edward and I were sitting watching TV and we both saw some lights under the tree get really bright, then flash out with a "ppffsstt" sound. We both thought it was just one bulb. Nope. When we took the tree apart, we found that a second string was out. Not only were they out, but the bulbs all look really burned out, with black rings around them. That's not good.

We decided that the best course of action was to de-string the tree. In the future, we could inspect the strings and look for a missing bulb, frayed wire or other trouble without the lights being on the tree. Edward's mother had an artificial tree that lasted decades. I had hoped this one would last longer and it will probably last many more years, just without the lights that came with it. The structure of the tree is fine. It took me three hours to deconstruct the tree. It was easy to see how the lights were attached. I'm guessing that the person whose job it was to string those lights could probably string a tree in less then an hour. There was a distinct pattern to the work and that made taking it apart easier.

In the end I salvaged 3 of the 5 sets of lights from the tree. Of the bad sets, each was made up of two strings, one that burned out, and one that didn't. I scavenged the bulbs from the working half and tossed everything else. I also replaced all the other single burned out bulbs on the strings I saved. With the bulbs I salvaged, I should have enough replacements to last a few years. Next year we'll get out the old strings we used on the potted trees to make up for the bad sets. We'll just have to string the lights ourselves.... And maybe, it won't take as long to put up next year... or take down.

A Simple Model of Coastal Erosion...

The USGS holds an Open House every November. We set up booths with displays to show our research to the public and try to present it in a way that everyone can understand.

The display I run is called The Wave Tank.

The Wave tank was a shallow pan with about 1-2 inches of water in the bottom. At one end is a shop fan, the type that can move a lot of air in a small space. In the middle of the pan is an island, built from playground sand, and green and brown colored sand from Micheals. The colored sand helps define the island surface and show the erosion as the model runs. I usually build the island like a dog's toy bone, thick and high on the ends and thin and low in the middle. On a real island the sand piles would represent dunes. On top of the dunes I place houses built from small wooden cubes, some with nails in them to represent pilings, others without nails. They are stuck into the sand at various levels and places. It represents a typical barrier island, one you can find along much of the East and Gulf coasts of the US. At the back of the pan there is another pile of sand, which represents the mainland behind the barrier island. It's a surprisingly simple representation of a coastal system and I use it to show what can happen during a hurricane.

When I turn on the fan, the effect is almost immediate. This simple model begins to erode within minutes. The whole thing takes about 60-90 minutes to run and shows several import coastal processes that occur during a storm. First, a scarp forms on the front of the island, and the sand begins to move from the front of the island to the sides. This demonstrates the natural sand transport that is always occurring on the beach. A small flat shelf of sand develops in front of the island as the "dunes" erode.

If you look close, you can actually see the sand grains moving along that shelf. Sometimes, when the houses aren't completely stuck into the sand, they'll blow over. That's OK, because damage to coastal structures isn't always caused by water.

When I build the island, I put a layer of brown sand inside the island. The neat thing about the brown sand is that, for some reason, it doesn't like to absorb the water. As it turns out, this is a good thing for the model. The brown sand traps air and behaves the same way a layer of muddy, marsh sediment would behave, acting at first like a resistant layer to erosion from waves. It makes the dune scarp more pronounced and for a short time protects the island from eroding.

As the storm continues to blow more sand is removed from the front of the island and transported to the sides, where spits form. In the center, where the surface is lower and narrower, the island becomes dangerously thin.

On the ends, the brown sand has been exposed and the overlying layer sides off into the water, taking the houses with it. This sand becomes an additional source of sediment for the growing spits. The houses on top of the sand, with pilings beneath them might tip or fall into the water.

This year, as an added twist, I built a seawall of small stones for a few of the runs. Behind the seawall, things are better, but only for a while. Waves refract around the seawall and begin to erode the dunes from the sides. In fact, in one run during the open house, the side of the island with the sea wall actually eroded faster then the side without at first, due to the action of the waves around the seawall. Eventually, the unprotected side lost it's battle while some of the island with the seawall remained protected. It showed that the seawall wasn't the solution to the problem of erosion and in some places made the erosion worse.

The model also shows that just because it had pilings didn't mean a house will survive. If they aren't blown over by the initial gusts of wind from the fan, they still had to deal with the erosion, overwash and undermining of their supports. If the pilings were long enough to push all the way through the sand to the bottom of the pan they might survive. Sometimes, a house that started at the top of the dune ended up standing in water, with no land around it anymore. If the pilings were too short, then it was only a matter of time before the sand would erode away, and the house would fall over.

Eventually, the center of the island breaks through, forming a breach. Sand from the two now disconnected islands is transported through the gap and an overwash deposit is formed. My once tall pile of sand has flattened out and changed shape.


I reset the model three times during open house. Sometimes with a seawall, once with a breakwater in front of the island, but not touching it. No two runs are ever the same. Sometimes the island erodes quicker, and sometimes slower. If the island is closer to the fan, it erodes faster, just as if the hurricane were a stronger storm. In our model we see scarps form and underlying "muds" exposed, dunes washed away and structures fail, we see islands breached and islands overwashed. All these things we see in nature, all these things we see on real islands in real storms, on real coastlines.

The first time I ran this model was in Reston, VA, for the USGS Open House at the National Center. I wasn't completely sure at the time if it would work. Oh boy, did it work! The kids not only loved it... they got it. Would you like to live on a barrier island?... "No..." Why? "Because it's going to go away." Where would you like to live? "Back here" they say pointing to the sand at the back. A father looked at me and said "Now I get it." One boy was particularly excited. He explained what he thought was going to happen to his Mom. And he was right. Then for the next hour, he returned about every 10 minutes, Mom in tow, to check the process. With each visit he pointed out what had changed, and which houses were closer to falling over, and which ones had. This year, in St Petersburg there was girl who returned again and again to check the progress of "her" house, the one she'd picked at the start of the run, to see if it was still standing.

It's a simple model, but it works. Over the course of an hour, I can show someone what might happen to a house built on a beach. I can show them what might happen to the island itself. A beach, or a barrier island, is a pile of sand. It is, by it's very nature, designed to move. Putting seawalls and riprap in front of a structure to stabilize it only delays the inevitable. Water moves sand. Wind moves water. In a hurricane the sand is going to move. A barrier island not a place you want to be during a storm. It's not hard to understand that. And maybe, just maybe, we really should be considering if we should be building out there in the first place.
